BRADFORD-MIRABEL SCHOOL

(Picture unavailable)

When the Bradford mine, south of Middletown, (later known as the Mirabel mine) was producing at its peak, there was a thriving community of 250-300. A schoolhouse was built in 1890; also a store which included a postoffice. The little reddish-brown schoolhouse was located on the hill north of the mine, west of Hiway 29 and visible from the highway. The school was closed sometime before 1924, and in 1924 the old cookhouse, schoolhouse and store were torn down. In later years a forest fire swept over Mirabel destroying the last structures.

In 1925 the school district voted with 3 other districts to form the Middletown Union School District, which now serves a large area around Middletown.
